Why does the Tesla steering wheel peel?
From around 2019 onwards, Tesla switched to a fully vegan interior — meaning no real leather anywhere, including the steering wheel. The material used is a synthetic vegan leather, which looks and feels premium when new but has proven to wear significantly faster than traditional leather.
Tesla issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB SB-23-32-003) acknowledging the widespread peeling and bubbling issue on Model 3 and Model Y steering wheels. Despite this, warranty coverage has not been guaranteed — and many owners have been quoted $1,000–$1,400 for a replacement steering wheel, with Tesla often citing "outside influence" such as hand lotion or hand sanitiser as the cause.
Which Tesla models are affected?
The peeling issue has been most widely reported on:
- Tesla Model 3 (2019–2023)
- Tesla Model Y (2020–2023)
The newer Highland (Model 3, 2024+) and Juniper (Model Y, 2024+) use updated materials, but the large number of pre-refresh vehicles on the road means this remains a very common problem.
